Sony Bravia 3D TV Promotional Video - Demonstrating 3D without using 3D! June 2010

In April 2010 Event Projection were enlisted by production company Hugo&Cat to create a video to demonstrate the benefits of the Sony Bravia 3D televisions.

The challenge was to create a film to be shown online and in-store to portray the depth of 3D in the same way that 3D transforms the viewing experience using a 2D medium to be shown online and in-store.

Instead of using clichéd computer-generated images flying out of the TV screen we were asked to work on their concept of projecting 2D footage onto 3D objects to create a 3D video environment using projection mapping in CAD software.

When it came to the 4 day shoot, the most suitable and cost effective way to achieve their goal was to use 2 Christie HD18K projectors and Catalyst to cover and mask as many of the planes for projection as possible.

Where usually we would use more projectors, the limitations meant that the two projectors would need to cover several surfaces, often on more than one axis. This meant that we needed to be particularly careful with positioning to minimise the differing focal planes and discrepancies of brightness across the surface. The CAD mapping gave us an indication of what would occur on the shoot but the work and innovation of our technicians armed with the right tools and a rigger who can secure a 100KG projector anywhere on a cramped set proved to be critical!
